Why Home Security is Your Best Investment

If you have ever experienced a home invasion, you are probably familiar with the feeling of absolute vulnerability that is hard to shake. Maybe you went and changed all your locks, put burglar bars in all your windows, and picked up a couple motion sensor chimes at RadioShack. These can be good things to do, but moderation is key. It is hard to maintain good judgement when you are in a place of emotional violation. I know. I’ve been there. But implementation of sound security measures for your home can greatly help you to avoid an impetuous and costly approach!

Many of the methods and materials can be a good and constructive addition to your home, even increasing value if your plan is to “flip” the property. The best offense is a good defense. Before you are upset and feeling violated, take a few moments to assess your needs. Perhaps you are in a condo that has a metal gate. Possibly, there is a potential risk that people can just put their hands through your metal pickets and reach the inside knob of your gate. If this is the case, there are assorted types of metal mesh that can be welded to one side of your fence. The aforementioned “burglar bars” are now available in many different styles, and designed for very specific uses. Many are, in fact, designed to be an aesthetic compliment to your home. If thought out and planned well, they can look rather nice while increasing the security factor of your home.

Another home consideration for your home are high security lock systems. Most standard locks are fairly easily picked by skilled thieves. Higher security locks, while somewhat more costly, offer additional safeguards not matched by standard locks or knobsets on offer at your local hardware for $35-$50.

Most high security systems have exclusive licensing arrangements whereby the original installer of the system can make copies of the key, and only to select authorized individuals. Two such manufacturers of special lock systems with such types of policies in place are Medeco and Bi-Lock.

Medeco locks use a unique system of pins and tumblers on both the side and the top of the key. The normal picking process involves “jiggling” of the individual pins until they are at the correct point to allow the key cylinder to turn. When there are two sets of pins and tumblers coming from two directions at once, it becomes very difficult, if not impossible, to do.

Another high security system, originating in Australia, is the Bi-Lock system. The keyway itself, looks like two slots next to each other. The key itself looks like a folded over key, or a double key. Like the Medeco system, it is essentially involving two sets of pins and tumblers that would need to be picked at once to violate it.

An authorized dealer of Medeco and exclusively licensed US midwest distributor of the Bi-Lock line, John Collier, proprietor of Collier Lock Service and 50 year veteran in the industry, says, “The Bi-Lock keys are pick proof and bump proof. We have licensing with them and Medeco where once we make ‘em, no one else can duplicate them, and we can only do it for specific people. Even if someone comes in and wants to pay hundreds of dollars for one key!”

So take some time to look around and think about your options when you are in a calm state of mind! Maybe you can find a few places to increase your home security cost-effectively and aesthetically. Then call your local locksmith for an estimate. You might be surprised to find out what that little shop where you get key copies has to offer. The previously quoted locksmith at www.TheHomeSecuritySpecialists.com installs and services intercoms, high security lock systems, burglar bars, along with the expected emergency lockout services, key changes, and basic lock and door knob services and maintenance.
