How to Choose and Use the Right Glue

It’s a sticky subject – not all glues are created equal. There are different types of glues for different surfaces and different applications. Using the wrong one may mean your project won’t hold together or, worse, you ruin what you were trying to repair. Read More >>>

Save On Bathroom Remodeling with Bathtub Refinishing

Bathtub and tile refinishing is a great way to save a lot of money on bathroom and kitchen remodeling. A new finish can brighten a finish, hide blemishes in your fixtures, and update colors without all the expense and hassles of a full remodel. You can also apply this process to kitchen cabinets, countertops, sinks, and tile work. To show you the kind of results and the speed of the process, you can view a video and see for yourself. Faucet Trend: Touch Free Comes Home

On average, a bathroom remodel costs $15,789 and a kitchen remodel costs $55,503 according to Remodeling Magazine’s 2007 Cost vs. Value report. But you don’t need to spend thousands of dollars to get a fresh look in your home. Focus on the items that get used the most, like the faucet.

“The faucet is really a focal point in the bathroom and kitchen,” says Andy Martin of Fontaine Faucets. “It’s the item that gets used the most, and therefore, it always gets noticed. A new faucet is like an instant facelift that can provide upgraded style, functionality, or both! And it’s one of the more easily accomplished DIY projects.”

Refrigerator Maintenance (Very Basic!)

You know those vent cover things on the bottom of your refrigerator? Right below your
refrigerator door? Those things that seem to fall off at 3am when you wake up and stumble
to your ‘fridge for a refreshing drink or a snack you know you shouldn’t have? Well, I
have a rental property in the nearby vicinity. Recently I had to spend some time up there
cleaning it up after some tennants (who may not get their security deposit back),
and the refrigerator vent cover was off and laying in the pantry. I cleaned it in the
sink with some SOS pads, and went to replace it. I had to open the door and get down on
the floor to get proper access. When I looked under the ‘fridge, I was amazed to see that
it was apparently growing hair! Instinctively thinking ‘this cannot be good’, I started to
remove the hair (dust, dirt, and who knows what else). Eventually, I began to see
refrigeration coils. I decided, that although it’s not something we often think about,
cleaning under our refrigerators is something we should all probably get in the habit of
doing once a year, or when we change the clocks, or something. I know what I’m doing as
soon as I get home!

Cool Tools!

So I had a web design project lately for remodeling company, and I decided to include a few graphics suggestive of building trades. I always get a little excited when I get into a store with a good tool selection, like a kid in a candy store! So, I had a little fun with some of my stock clipart. For some reason I specialize in Home Improvement and Contractors’ websites, so I have a lot of tools and homes and such on graphic CD. I think this one came out pretty good, and I enjoyed myself!

How About Home Improvement

Welcome to HowAboutHomeImprovement. I’ll be adding some entries about my trials and tribulations in the field, some tricks I learn here and there, and lots else about Home Improvement, Carpentry(my first trade! 10+ years), business, marketing, and who knows what else. Hope I might contribute at least a little something to the thousands of practitioners, enthusiasts, and practioners who might find me on the Internet. I built houses, stores, banks, and theatrical sets. I’ll probably build a few more before my time is through (hope so, anyway!). I very much love my work, and hope to reach others who feel the same. I’ve done both framing and finish work. I paint once in awhile, and wield a pretty mean drywall blade. I always measure twice, and if I cut more than once, I cut it proud, ‘cuz you can always take more off but you can’t put it back on. I think I have more tools for measuring, squaring, and plum-ing than anything else, and I clean them once per month.
